SynthID not detected: what it means and how to check your image

Remove SynthID with Spoofzy, then check the result in Gemini.

The three Gemini SynthID results, explained.
The practical answer

“SynthID not detected” means Gemini found no SynthID watermark in the image you uploaded. After using Spoofzy’s SynthID Removal tool, check the downloaded image in Gemini and compare its response with the original.

What “SynthID detected” means

Gemini has found a watermark indicating that Google AI created or edited all or part of the image. This can apply to generated pictures and AI edits to existing photos.

For a before-and-after comparison, save this response alongside the original image. You now have a starting point for checking the processed copy.

What “SynthID not detected” means

Gemini found no detectable SynthID watermark in this file. When checking a processed image, record that response alongside the new copy so you can compare the two.

Gemini’s SynthID check covers Google AI. An image from another AI system can also receive a “not detected” result, so the answer alone cannot establish how it was created.

Why a SynthID check can be inconclusive

Very simple images and small AI edits can give Gemini too little information for a clear answer. Extensive changes can also affect detection.

Check that the upload finished and that you selected the intended image. Try the original downloaded file if you were using a screenshot. If the answer remains inconclusive, save it with the image for reference.

Compare the original and the processed image

Keep the two images together and give them clear names, such as original.png and processed.png. Run the same check on each, then save the responses. This makes the difference easy to see and easy to share with a teammate.

Alongside the watermark response, compare the image itself: fine text, faces, colour and edges. A simple two-file check gives you a useful picture of the result.

SynthID, metadata and visible watermarks

SynthID is embedded in the image. GPS coordinates, camera details and capture dates sit in its metadata. A logo drawn in the corner is a visible part of the picture. Each calls for its own tool.

Use Spoofzy’s SynthID Removal for supported Google AI images and Metadata Cleaner for file details. This separation makes it easier to choose the right tool and check the result.

Does Metadata Cleaner remove SynthID?

Metadata Cleaner removes supported file information such as GPS, device and date fields. For SynthID, use the dedicated image tool and check the returned copy in Gemini.

Which file should I upload for the final check?

Use the image downloaded from Spoofzy. Keeping that exact copy makes the check easier to compare with the original.
